Indigenous knowledge systems have long been a beacon of environmental sustainability and resilience, cultivated over thousands of generations. Through meticulous care for Country, Aboriginal people have achieved a natural equilibrium unmatched elsewhere. As we confront the challenges of a changing climate and its impact on our natural world, the concepts of Indigenous Ways of Knowing, Being and Doing, have much to offer in this space.
Recent natural disasters in Victoria and NSW have underscored the critical need for effective relief, recovery, and healing processes, particularly in trauma-affected communities and damaged landscapes. Aboriginal communities, in particular, have faced challenges in accessing culturally appropriate services during and after flood, wildfire, and storm events, exacerbating existing trauma and negatively impacting landscape health and biodiversity.
The Our Country-Our Way symposium offers a national perspective with a localised focus, spotlighting current issues through recent Indigenous community experiences. It aims to provide pathways forward in building resilience and healing in communities and landscapes through Indigenous knowledge systems. As the saying goes, Healthy Country means healthy people.
A must-attend event for all emergency management and community recovery practitioners.
