The Everyday: Toshi Singh

The art that I make is very personal, the muse is often an inspiration close to my heart such as a special dish my mother likes to make, a special memory from childhood or a person I know and love. – Toshi Singh 

The Everyday presents a series of watercolours that celebrate the beauty hidden in the small, overlooked moments that make up our daily lives. From the fragrant and colourful markets in Bangalore to the shops and streetscapes of Mooroolbark, Toshi Singh’s exhibition reminds viewers to appreciate these fleeting moments while simultaneously tracing her migration and experience of building a new home and community in Australia.

About Toshi Singh

Toshi Singh is a self-taught visual artist and illustrator who migrated from Bangalore, India and is now based on Wurundjeri Country in Mooroolbark, Victoria. Working primarily in watercolour painting, collage illustration and stop-motion animation Singh is inspired by her direct environment.  Her practice captures vignettes of her daily life in intricate and captivating detail and her work has been featured in print and online publications such as Frankie Magazine, Hindustan Times, Homegrown and Coonoor & Co. Most recently she illustrated The Spice Companion by Indian-Australian author Sarina Kamini published in 2022.     

 

About Yarra Ranges Regional Museum 

Opened in 2011, Yarra Ranges Regional Museum promotes a greater understanding of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the Yarra Ranges region through exhibitions, collections and programs. The Museum is custodian of a collection of over 13,000 cultural objects, including Indigenous belongings related to Coranderrk Aboriginal Station and a sub-collection related to opera diva Dame Nellie Melba (1861-1931).
