Planned Burns Program

Yarra Ranges Council is proud to be in the process of expanding its planned burning program. The program is a culmination of support for the Firesticks Program and Fire as a Land Management Tool Policy, recognising that fire has a vital role to play in supporting our community and environment.

The program is further supported by the recently endorsed Nature Plan 2024 – 2034, which details actions, outcomes and resourcing to further support the delivery of planned burns on Council reserves.

The first burn in the program was delivered on the 29th May 2024 at Spadonis Reserve in Yering. This healing burn was led by Council's Firesticks Officer and supported by the Bushlands Team. The burn was a historical moment, with this being the first fully Council-delivered burn and first Council-delivered cultural burn, in Yarra Ranges Council history. The burn itself was calm and low intensity, and achieved valuable learnings around operational delivery and cultural development through many sections of the organisation.

The video below was filmed during Yarra Ranges Council's first cultural burn.
