Upwey footpath improvements

Project Update - 30th January 2023:

Following an arborist assessment of the site and scope of works prior to the commencement, it has been decided to postpone the works.

This decision has been made because the works will involve considerably more root pruning than first anticipated and this root pruning may adversely impact the street trees with potentially warmer and dryer weather ahead.

A new date for commencement works has not been set yet but affected residents and property owners will be informed once the new delivery timelines are set.

About the project

The footpaths in Upwey have been a concern with the current asphalt having been lifted and cracked by tree roots and general movement in the area, this has led to some safety concerns.

This project is continuing the renewal works commenced at the lower end of the street where the new Sit, Meet and Eat spaces have been created and will continue the banding and surface theme created in this space.

The scope of these works will involve the renewal of the asphalt surface, removal of the existing banding and the addition of feature pavers.

Upwey Main Street

Location

On the South side of Main Street, the works start from outside the IGA at Mahony Street and extend to the top of Main Street and around the corner of Morris Road to the car park access road.

On the North side of Main Street, the works start at the subway at the rail station and extend to the top of Main Street at the roundabout but don’t include the footpaths paths inside the privately owned shopping strip shops (# 1 to 27 Main Street).

Future Works

The Upwey Town Centre Masterplan is scheduled for formal consultation and development in 2023.

This will be the opportunity for the Upwey community to have its input and influence on the longer-term opportunities for the Town Centre beyond these maintenance works.

Town Centre Masterplans typically will look at things like:

  • Landscaping
  • Footpaths and walkways
  • Accessibility
  • Street furniture
  • Signage
  • Lighting
  • Drainage
  • Bike facilities
  • Gathering spaces
  • Parking and traffic flow
