Council elections are happening in Victoria this October.

During the caretaker period, from 12pm 17 September until 6pm 26 October 2024, councils across Victoria must comply with the Local Government Act 2020. Council's Election Period Policy(PDF, 195KB) applies during this time which states that:

  • Strategic decisions are not to be made by an outgoing council in a way that would unfairly bind an incoming Council.
  • Ensuring councillors who are candidates for election are not advantaged over people standing as a candidate who are not current councillors.

During the Election/Caretaker Period:

  • councils are prohibited from making certain types of decisions
  • material produced by councils must not contain matter that will affect voting at the election.

During this time, you will notice decreased activity across Council communications channels.

Candidates are not allowed to comment on any social media posts or respond to residents from a Yarra Ranges Council social media platform. Council will delete any comments made by candidates on any of Council's social media pages.

Comments, posts, and mentions made by members of the public on a Yarra Ranges Council page that promote a candidate will also be deleted.

Local government elections are coordinated by the Victorian Electoral Commission, visit their website for more information or if you have any questions.
