What you'll learn in this activity
Ages 1+
Purpose
Watch and Wonder. This activity encourages a child to use their senses and language to explore and describe what they can see and hear outside.
Let's play!
Head outside and encourage your children to look and listen carefully.
Ask them to:
- Find something up high
- Find something down low
- Find something rough
- Find something smooth
- What can you hear?
- Can you find an insect?

Talking together
Question
As above, ask questions that support your child to explore the space and look for detail. Talk about what they find, what they like, and why.
Extension
You can build on this list to add other items to find. Older children might like to write about what they see and hear, or perhaps create a drawing or painting.
We'd love to see your creations and home based play! Share with us on Facebook at @yrfamilies #YarraRangesPlay
