Things you'll need for this activity

  • Cress seeds

  • Cracked Egg shell

  • Texta’s

  • Cotton wool

  • Water

What you'll learn in this activity 

Ages: Age 3+

Purpose: This simple science activity looks at how plants grow from seed and how they need water and light to help them grow.

Let's play!

  1. Wash and dry your cracked egg.

  2. With a texta draw faces on the outside of your egg shells.

  3. Fill the egg shell with cotton wool or tissues.

  4. Pour a little bit of water over the top of the  cotton wool or tissue.

  5. Place the seeds on top  of the wet cotton or tissue and place near a window.

  6. Watch your cress grow each day - don’t forget to add a bit of water everyday.

Let's talk

Qs - What else could we grow from seed?  What meals could we add the cress to?

Extension - When the cress is ready to harvest the children can cut it with scissors add it to their meal. Try growing carrot tops, celery or onions. Record the height and time it takes.
