Case Study: Cherry Hill Orchards
Yarra Ranges Council’s Economic Development and Investment Department's relationship with Wandin East business Cherry Hill Orchards and Box Hill Institute’s Jobs and Skills Centre was strengthened during 2020 after COVID19 restrictions changed the way in which Cherry Hill Orchards operated.
Prior to COVID19, Cherry Hill Orchards was receiving assistance through Council’s Priority Investment Process (PIP) which allowed them to development a large-scale packing facility at Coldstream. PIP offers a business representative from the Economic Development and Investment Team to work with the business and Councils Planning and Major Projects teams, to ensure significant investments are supported through the planning process.
Since COVID19, the Economic Development and Investment Team have been able to link Cherry Hill Orchards with a range of contacts across all levels of government and local businesses including the Department of Jobs Precincts and Regions (DJPR) and Box Hill Institute Jobs and Skills Centre. By working closely with these contacts, Cherry Hill Orchards has received assistance to obtain government funding and COVID training to ensure that they are operating in a COVID safe environment. Cherry Hill Orchards now has a great ongoing relationship with Box Hill Institute who assisted them in finding local seasonal workers for their berry picking season.
This case study shows the variety of ways in which Council can assist businesses from, assisting in obtaining planning permits, linking them with Government departments to advocating on their behalf.
