Apply for a real estate board permit

You need a Real Estate Board Permit if you want to place a board to promote property or land for sale or lease on a road reserve or Council land.

Permits are valid for 3 months only.

If the board/sign is advertising a community organisation or event please apply for a Community Advertising Sign Permit instead.

Please review our considerations below before applying

Real estate board consideration

Boards are permitted on road reserves or Council land where they appear directly in front of the property they are promoting and wouldn’t be clearly visible to passers-by if located within the boundaries of that property.

Unless a sign refers to a large rural property, only one board per frontage is allowed.

Large rural properties may carry multiple boards provided they are a minimum of 300 metres apart.

Boards must be drafted and printed in a professional manner to the satisfaction of Council

Boards are limited to 1.4m in height and 1.8m in width.

Boards must not be attached or affixed in any way to a:

  • tree or power pole.
  • VicRoads sign or roadside service sign.
  • Council fixture, asset or anything that is under the management of Council.

No external or internal lighting of the Board is permitted.

Boards are to be removed within two days of selling or letting the property they represent.

Open for inspection sign considerations

You do not require a permit to place Open for Inspection signs.

You cannot place an Open for Inspection sign on any road or public place unless the sign is placed:

  • on the day the property is open for inspection or auction;
  • either on the nature strip in front of the property for sale/auction or on the nature strip at either end of the street the property is for sale/auction;
  • 750mm from the kerb and allows at least 1.2m space between the sign and the property boundary for pedestrian access.

All Open for Inspection signs must be removed within one hour of completion of the open for inspection/auction.
