The Feeling Machines featuring David Miller

Big and Me - David Miller

Image: David Miller

An exhibition introducing children to the world of feelings and the myths, truths and realities of mental illness. Showcasing original 3D paper sculptures created by artist and author David Miller. These intricate works were photographed to create the images for his book Big and Me.

In the book, the characters Big and Small are machines that work together as a team. “But some days Big goes a bit wobbly, and I get a lot worried.” Through the book Big malfunctions in a variety of ways and Small tries to help with the assistance of The Boss, Mechanic and Tools. The story is a metaphor for a child living with an adult who is living with mental illness.

Alongside this exhibition there will be children’s workshops to Design your own feeling machine, facilitated by artist Bronwyn Ward, and an author reading event, giving children the chance to meet David and learn about his book.

Suitable for children ages 6 and up.

The Feeling Machines exhibition and associated events are supported by Yarra Ranges Council, Yarra Ranges Regional Museum and Creative Victoria as part of The Big Anxiety Festival across Yarra Ranges.

How to engage

These workshops are free but places are very limited. Bookings are required.

Artist biography

David Miller

David is an artist, paper sculptor and author who now paints highly detailed landscapes and fragments of landscape.

In outback WA he found an old Masonic Lodge standing alone in the vastness. In a deep Pilbara gorge he found twisted roots of a giant fig tree and nearby a delicate flower growing out of the hard rock. At the entrance to the Gippsland lakes he found an old sea wall and in NZ sheep tracks sculpting a green hillside. These and others David has painted in oils on stretched canvas, often cropping his composition tight, to create sometimes edgy, other times peaceful contemporary landscapes.

Whilst David’s focus is now on painting, his career has been a long journey from graphic design to illustration, calligraphy, award winning children’s book author and illustrator and paper sculpture. His work has been displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions in most states of Australia and includes a piece in the NGV collection.
