27 Red Stringybark Grassy Dry Forest - Dandenongs (EVC 22)

Community structure 

Woodland dominated by Eucalyptus goniocalyx (Long-leaf Box) and E. macrorhyncha (Red Stringybark) up to 20m high. The middle storey is sparse containing Exocarpos cupressiformis (Cherry Ballart) and low wattles. This community is characterised by a ground layer dominated by a high diversity of drought tolerant tussock grasses and Themeda triandra (Kangaroo Grass), herbs and resurrection ferns.  

Distribution 

Within the Shire this community is limited to a small section on the west face of Mt. Dandenong in Ferntree Gully National Park and Chandlers Hill, at altitudes from 250-350m.  It is an exposed area with dry soil on ridges and slopes. This community is rare within the Shire but may have been more prevalent before urbanisation and repeated fire disturbance.
