19 Long-leaf Box Herb-rich Foothill Forest (EVC 23)
Community structure
Medium woodland to open forest to 25m high with a mixture of eucalypts, dominated by Eucalyptus obliqua (Messmate), E. goniocalyx (Long-leaf Box), E. radiata (Narrow-leaf Peppermint) and E. macrorhyncha (Red Stringybark). Exocarpos cupressiformis (Cherry Ballart) is a common lower tree or large shrub in the middle storey, which contains a shrub layer to 5m high. A dense and diverse storey of herbs and grasses, sedges and bracken characterises this vegetation community.
Distribution
This is a common community of the north face of the Dandenong Ranges on exposed slopes and ridges to 250m and the foothills, extending in a band from Montrose to Wandin East/Seville. It occurs on well drained fertile clay loam soils It is characterised by urban development and agriculture and undisturbed remnants are significant.
