Erect tufted perennial fern on a thick underground stem (rhizome), sometimes forming a short trunk. New growth bright green, erect, older fronds arching, producing new bulbils on ends.

- LeavesOblong dark green fronds, twice divided, to 30 cm wide. Narrow segments, tips pointed, larger basal lobe lying beside midrib, margins broadly toothed. Midrib scaly, grooved, distinct side ridges. Short densely scaly dark brown stems.
- FlowersNon-flowering. Round spore cases in 2 rows on side veins. Light brown circular membrane with dark centre, covering attached in the centre.
