Orcharding and Jam Making with Beci Orpin

Beci Orpin Portrait

A three-minute film and creative learning activity for levels 2-4, relating to historical sources, the technology of food production, and visual art.

Visit an orchard with multidisciplinary artist Beci Orpin and learn about the history of orcharding in the Yarra Ranges. Beci examines vintage jam labels from the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum collection, explains what jam is made from, leads us through her creative process, and shows us how to make a 3D paper piece of fruit, using printable templates.

This is a Yarra Ranges Regional Museum Creative Learning Activity.

How to run the activity

Step 1: Print out worksheets on coloured paper, e.g. orange, purple, red, pink. Gather scissors and glue sticks.

Step 2: Introduce the session and play the three-minute film Orcharding and Jam Making with Beci Orpin.

Step 3: Distribute materials.

Step 4: Reflect on the session, questions could include what kind of fruit has been grown in the Yarra Ranges? How was the fruit picked? What do you need to make jam? Which type of fruit is the class favourite?

Optional extension: Gather the paper fruit together in one or more large glass jars to make a display of ‘jam’.
