Join us as David Cherry takes us through learning some important skills for helping people in emergency situations. The session will be interactive and very informative to assist community, and in your personal life.

  • Preparing psychologically to work in difficult environments
  • Tips on keeping yourself safe in a Community Emergency Hub including during home and site visits
  • The skills of the helper including communication skills
  • The difference between emotional support and counselling
  • Simple, practical strategies for supporting individuals who may be acutely emotionally distressed including people who may be suicidal
  • Vicarious trauma and its impact
  • Non violent communication techniques
  • Guidelines for developing a plan to help prevent and manage vicarious trauma

This training has been made available to help communities become better prepared for the aftermath of emergencies such as storms, floods and bushfires.

This workshop is offered as part of Council’s free Skills Building Program. Yarra Ranges not for profits organisations and creatives are welcome to register.
