Nature Strips & Roadsides Guideline Summary

We want your nature strip to be beautiful! Our Nature strip and Roadside Guidelines will help guide you to maintain the front of your property in a nice way, which is safe for the rest of the community.

Here are some of our frequently asked questions.

What can I plant?

You can plant a range of ground cover plants and low growing shrubs.

Make sure plants are less than 1 metre in heights are are not woody, prickly or spiky. They need to be 1 metre away from drainage and other amenities. Before planting, please ensure the plant is not a weed.

What else can I have on my nature strip?

You can have pine, woodchip or bark mulch of a natural colour to a depth of 100mm around your plants which needs to be kept tidy. Some gravel mulches and toppings are allowed to replace grass in residential areas. Some letterboxes are also allowed, but it is best to check the guidelines and with Council if you are unsure.

What is not allowed on my nature strip?

  • Fine gravel mulches or pea straw
  • Sugar cane and coloured mulches
  • Hard paving and stepping stones
  • Rocks or pebbles greater than 7mm in diameter
  • Sleepers
  • Scoria
  • Sculptures
  • Artificial turf
  • Irrigation systems
  • Electrical wiring like permanent tree lights
  • Metal stakes or star pickets
  • Anything that may effect public safety or fire risk
  • Does not fit with the streetscape

What else do I need to consider?

Certain boundaries and intersections must be adhered to when landscaping nature strips. All nature strips need to be continually maintained and be fire safe. It is always best to check with Council before commencing any changes.
