Before you start any project, whether it is renovating your home or removing a tree, it’s important to understand what permits you may need.
 
Building and development is controlled by several federal, state and local controls to ensure it is safe and appropriate for the area.
 
The need for permits is determined by two main factors:

 

Where the property is located (the exact address)
This determines what planning controls, such as zones and overlays, apply to the property.

What you want to do
Specific information about what you intend to do. build a fence, remove a tree, build a shed, open a business, build a home).

 
Depending on the type of work, and where the property is located you may need:

Planning permit

To make sure the project is appropriate for the site, neighbouring area and environment.

Local councils are responsible for assessing planning applications. You can, however, contact a private planning consultant to help prepare your application.

There are two types of planning applications;

Building permit

To ensure the works are safe and complies with the Australian Building Regulations. Private building surveyors issue building permits. You can use a building surveyor of your choice.

If you need a planning permit, you must have a planning first.
