Apply for a common boundary fencing contribution

If your property adjoins a council reserve, you may be eligible for a contribution if the fence needs replacing.

Yarra Ranges Council will contribute 50% of the replacement or repair cost of a standard 1.65m high paling fence or 1.4m high standard 6 strand wire farm fence when:

  • The neighbouring land adjacent to the applicant land is vested in Council and
  •  The neighbouring land adjacent to the applicant land is used for the purpose of a park, reserve or Council facility and
  •  The fence is failing and there is a need. The fence must be failing and beyond minor maintenance

A contribution to boundary fencing is not available for:

  • initial fencing, where a fence has not previously existed
  • fencing adjacent to a road, road reserve or unconstructed road reserve
  • fencing that has already been repaired or replaced, without prior application.

Yarra Ranges Council will not contribute to the cost of pruning or removal of private vegetation, any permit cost, electrical work, retaining walls, fence extensions, capping or pedestrian gate.

Online

Step 1.Check your eligibility

Before continuing, please search for your property on our online mapping system:

Public > Property (yarraranges.vic.gov.au)

a) In the mapping system, does the fence that needs replacing run along a boundary that has a yellow line?

  • If no, the land adjacent to your property is not vested in Council, therefore we cannot contribute to fencing costs.

  • If yes, please continue - you may be eligible for a common boundary fencing contribution.

Please note: some Council managed land is not vested in Council, so adjacent fencing will not be eligible for a contribution to fencing costs.

b) Is the fence failing and beyond minor maintenance?

  • If no, we cannot contribute to fencing costs.
  • If yes, please continue - you may be eligible for a common boundary fencing contribution.

Step 2.Gather your quotes

To ensure funds are used equitably, we require 3 quotes for the cost of repair or replacement of the fence (including costs for removal of the old fence).

Please note: Planning controls restrict the type of fencing you can have, depending on the planning zone your property is in.

To check your planning zone, search your property on our online mapping system: Public > Property (yarraranges.vic.gov.au) and click on ‘Planning’ on the left-hand side.

* Quotes submitted MUST be for the following only

  • Neighbourhood Residential Zone: 1.65m high paling fence
  • Green Wedge Zone: 1.4m high 6 strand wire farm fence

If your property is in a Neighbourhood Residential Zone, you may choose to build a higher or alternative type of fence (subject to relevant Planning restrictions), however Yarra Ranges Council will only contribute to the cost of the above fence heights and types, therefore quotes for fencing other than those listed above will not be considered.

Should you choose to construct a higher or different type of fence, you will be responsible for any additional cost.

    Step 3.Complete the application

Enter your contact details, fencing details, photo of the existing fence and 3 quotes.

We will contact you within 7 days to let you know next steps.

    Things to note
    • Quotes must detail the cost of a standard paling fence to the height of 1.65m, or 6 strand farm wire fence to the height of 1.4m, depending on zoning. Quotes for fencing other than those listed above will not be considered.
    • When constructed, the fence palings must face public land, therefore the framing and rails will face the private property.
    • No double gates are to be replaced or installed.
    • On completion of works the Council reserve is to be left free of any debris or damage. If not, the co-payment from Council will be revoked to establish re-instatement costs.
