Council is reaching out to community members of Chirnside Park to understand how to make our local streets safer for everyone and to encourage more walking or cycling around their local neighbourhood.

The feedback received will help Council develop a Local Area Traffic Management plan for Chirnside Park, alongside the data and knowledge Council has already from day-to-day community requests and traffic surveys.

This will help Council propose recommendations to help kids travel to school and the parks safer and to make it easier for the elderly to cross the road.

Chirnside Ward Councillor, Richard Higgins, said that having a plan in place would allow Council to be more strategic and proactive to address local transport issues.

“We want to make Chirnside Park a place where everyone can safely move around and get to where they need to be, as easily as possible,” Cr Higgins said.

“Chirnside Park is one of the key activity centres in the Yarra Ranges, and we’ve seen quite a bit of development in recent times which has brought with it increased activity and vibrancy to the area.

“That does mean though that there are more vehicles on our roads, which can cause safety implications so we’re actively looking into how we can address these impacts and make Chirnside Park a safer and more accessible place to walk and cycle around.

“It’s really important that we hear from community about what they think we can do to make it easier and safer for them to get around the town, which we’ll then use to develop this plan.”

Community members can visit https://shaping.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/local-area-traffic-management-project-chirnside-park to pinpoint on a map the areas that they feel are currently working well, areas where safety can be improved to benefit the community and links required to improve the walking and cycling network.

Council will also be out in the community to hear feedback face-to-face at a number of locations which can also be found on the website.

Community members have until Tuesday 22 April to provide feedback.
