16 Days of Activism Grants

Council offered grants of up to $1500 for community projects that supported the 2024 global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign.

This global campaign aims to raise awareness and galvanise individuals, communities, and organisations to address gender inequalities and call out harmful gender stereotypes to prevent violence and create a safer and more equal society.

Grant applications are currently closed.

Selection Criteria

To be considered for funding in this category, your project will meet a minimum of two of the following criteria (one mandatory plus one additional):

Mandatory (projects must meet this criteria):

• Provide opportunities for community to participate in a local, community-led 16 Days of Activism event or initiative. Initiatives must highlight the importance of 16 Days of Activism and why the campaign exists.

Optional (projects must meet at least one of these criteria):

• Create volunteer opportunities.

• Build on existing community strengths and opportunities.

• Strengthen social connection, a sense of belonging and inclusion.

• Community events that build a shared vision and goals for a local community.

Note: 

• Projects can apply for up to $1500 through the Connected and Vibrant Communities category.  Applicants will need to demonstrate how the 16 Days of Activism event will raise awareness of gender-based violence in the wider community.

• If successful, applicants will still be eligible to apply for funding through the Monthly Grants program, in addition to a 16 Days of Activism grant. 

• The projects need to take place during 16 Days of Activism (25 November – 10 December 2024)

16 Days of Activism - Equity in Parenting: A Family Celebration & Support Event

A gender equity event for families of all kinds celebrating and supporting gender equity in parenting. The event will involve a facilitated children’s program where experienced children’s workers will support children in activities including story time (with children's books focused on gender equity) and craft activities that support gender equality. There will also be an art therapist running activities for parents and children to engage in together, with movement and art materials to explore gender equity. Peer support workers from our Family Violence Peer Support team will be present to offer one-on-one conversations and share information and resources about family violence.

16 days of Activism - Walk against Family Violence

This walk (around Lilydale Lake) aims to raise awareness of the experience of family violence with a particular focus on local experience and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities experience. The event will be supported by local community organisations who will be present and running small activities. The walk will be dotted with stops to educate and inform participants of family violence experiences, services and stories. This activity will be coordinated by and include Aboriginal experiences and cultural knowledge. There will be a welcome and smoking ceremony, lunch and then small group activities run by the local community groups.

16 Days of Activism - Growing Respectful Relationships

Growing a healthy plant from a seed takes time, trust and the right environment to thrive. The Growing Respectful Relationships project is a sustainable initiative that aims to plant the seed of conversation and trust amongst friends, loved ones and community to raise awareness about healthy relationships, respect and the 16 days of Activism. The initiative will involve sharing 500 handheld seed packets of native everlasting daisies and 16 Days of Activism Yarra Ranges bookmark across the Urban and Hills areas. The initiative will create opportunities for community members to either plant the native seeds personally to enjoy, or to share them with others as an opportunity to open a conversation about the 16 Days campaign, respect, and local support services.
