What you'll learn in this activity
Ages: 4+ with adult assistance
Purpose: Creative sculpture using recycled materials: encourages imagination and creativity, problem solving in construction, good for fine motor skills and also has a sensory component in the gluing
Let's play!
1. To make the glue:
- ½ cup plain flour and 1 cup water
- Mix water gradually into flour until smooth.
- Microwave 30 seconds and stir.
- Microwave another 30 seconds, mix till smooth. Let cool until comfortable to touch.
2. Cut off one of the egg cups; cut petals from egg carton.
3. Attach to the egg cup with tape.
4. Tear off pieces of paper, dip into glue and stick on cardboard, a few layers all over, smoothing down any rough edges
5. Allow to dry well then paint.
Optional – you can paint all over dried sculp-ture with PVA and this seals the paint giving a glossy finish when dry
Let’s talk..
Qs - A great ‘teachable moment’ Lots of opportunities for working co-operatively and building language along the way eg: mixing, sticking, tearing, smoothing down, painting, colors, wet/dry, talking about shapes and concept of recycling, creating from materials found at home.
Extension - Children can create their own sculpture; they may be inspired to make an abstract form, mask or different animal or object. You might explore online some paper mache crea-tions.
