What is the learning in this activity?

Ages: Age 3+

Purpose: Exploring, appreciating nature and Country, and learning more about Indigenous culture to celebrate  National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day - Tues 4th August.

Let’s explore!

We can celebrate the Country we live on by getting out into our gardens or going on a local walk in our neighbourhood and spending time noticing and appreciating the earth, the plants and animals, the waterways and the airways.

As we explore we might like to seek out and find some natural things with which to create a nature picture.

Connecting with nature, and making a nature picture together, are great ways to talk to children about the Country we live, learn and play on - which in the Yarra Ranges is Wurundjeri Country. It’s also a great opportunity to learn more about Wurundjeri connection to Country, family, community, culture and language, and children!

Older children might like to create a word or message in their picture for others to read - like WOMENJIKA, which means welcome in the Wurundjeri language - Woiwurrung.
